Friendship: Subjectively Defined.
I found something in my readings for moral philosophy (PHIL257)...let me duplicate it here:
e) deep personal relations - Personal relations can make life worse, or not affect its quality at all, but when they become deep, authentic, reciprocal relations of friendship and love, then they hae a value apart from the pleasure and benefit they give.
- J. Griffin, Well-Being, Ch 2, iii, The Ends of Life
I think that pretty sums up how I feel regarding friendship. It's not so much that I CAN'T socialize, it's just that social relations thus far have made life worst. What I need are friendships that are "deep, authentic, reciprocal".
-andrew
* Note Defining the terms:
deep = provocative, intellectual dialect
authentic = friendship not as a means to an end, but friendship for the sake of itself.
reciprocal = mutual input and support
